Better transit is possible
The Transit for All Coalition is working to make a public transit system so reliable, accessible, safe, and easy to use that it becomes the most convenient transportation option across the Tucson area
We want our transit system to be…
Fare-free. At first glance, it looks sensible to make the beneficiaries of our transit system pay for it. We agree, but we think all residents of Tucson benefit from lessened congestion, lower carbon emissions, safer roads, and more transportation options to fallback on. Our parks, libraries, and the roads themselves are freely accessible to the public, and it makes sense for us to treat transit the same way.
Funded from dedicated sources. Our transit system’s funding is in jeopardy in each annual budget. Until we fix that, our city is not giving its residents a solid foundation on which to plan their lives. We believe our transit system must have clear, dedicated funding.
Used to grow our city. A transit system is most useful when it connects where people live to the destinations they want to reach. We want decisions about our transit system to be more responsive to the development and growth of our city, so that it can play a part in fostering new jobs, more affordable housing, and better land use in urban Tucson.
Accessible. Our bus stops should have benches, ramps, and shade structures. Key information on routes, schedules, route changes, and delays should be communicated as clearly as possible. We seek to make sure these improvements are funded and prioritized based on rider input.
Planned for everyone. We want Tucson to envision its transit system being the most convenient option between point-A and point-B for everyone, and for our transit system to be planned in conjunction with other transportation spending instead of those decisions being made separately or after-the-fact.
Transparent. Our transit system crosses into multiple jurisdictions, which fragments its oversight structure and makes it hard for the public to understand how its funded. We are working to make the system’s oversight and funding more clear.
We do it by
Defining a vision
Our coalition has gathered input from thousands of residents to put together the vision for better transit laid out above.
Amplifying voices
We inform our supporters of surveys, public meetings, and other opportunities to make their voices heard.
Connecting supporters
We are present in the community and host events to connect transit supporters with one another.
Researching solutions
We research transportation law, the transit systems in other cities, and funding mechanisms to find solutions that can be applied here.
